This means a lot to my daughter who is approaching 22 & one of her birthday gifts.
Sherman meant so much to her that I didn't have the heart to tell her of his passing this year while out in L.A.. My daughter had just gotten drafted to become a Pro-Soccer player in December 08 and postponed the information only when her season was over..
Oh how she cried...When I found Debbi last yr I kept her as a facebook friend & new one day she will paint for me..I am honored that Debbi has added this painting to her volume 1 addition.
This book is heart warming...a must in every library & a great keepsake/heirloom.
We all miss Sherman, Thank you Debbie Flood..

Your keyboard may be dirtier than you think, according to a recent swab test by a U.K. microbiologist.

Sure, it may sound like a hypochondriac's excuse to stay away from the office. But a growing body of research suggests that computer mice and keyboards are, in fact, prime real estate for germs.

It's a phenomenon most recently illustrated by tests at a typical office environment in the United Kingdom. A consumer advocacy group commissioned the tests in which British microbiologist James Francis took a swab to 33 keyboards, a toilet seat and a toilet door handle at the publication's London office in January.

Francis then tested the swabs to see what nasty germs he managed to pick up. He found that four of the keyboards tested were potential health hazards -- and one had levels of germs five times higher than that found on the toilet seat.

Born in 1943 on a farm near Salem, Oregon, Larry Mahan is the 1966-1970 and 1973 All-Around Champion as well as the 1965 and 1967 Bull Riding Champion. Always a rough stock rider, he earned more than a half-million dollars in a professional career spanning sixteen years. Called the "cowboy in the gray flannel suit" by "Time" magazine, Larry Mahan was among the first professional hands to fly his own plane, conduct rodeo training schools, and hand out business cards on the circuit. After retiring from the arena in 1977, Larry Mahan began a successful business career. This hour-long interview was conducted in Oklahoma City at the National Cowboy & Western Heritage Museum.

HISTORY OF THE KIGER MUSTANG

In 1971 the Wild Free-Roaming Horse and Burro Act was passed by congress to protect all wild horses and burros on public lands. The Bureau of Land Management was given the responsibility to protect, manage and control these wild populations. In order to keep the herds at manageable levels, roundups or gatherings are held periodically. At this time they are counted, branded and examined. Excess animals are offered for adoption to the public, and the rest are returned to the range.

In 1977, during one of these gatherings in the remote area of Beatty's Butte, Oregon, a particular kind of horse was discovered. BLM Wild Horse Specialist, E. Ron Harding, while inspecting the herd, noticed that a number of these horses were strikingly similar in color and conformation. Upon closer observation, he ascertained that they carried the primitive markings of the Spanish mustangs. Mr. Harding arranged for these horses to be separated from the rest and held at the Burns district facility in Oregon.

When the BLM had completed all the gatherings for that year, a suitable area was chosen to release these animals. To prevent losing all the horses to a natural catastrophe, two Herd Management Areas (HMA) were selected in southeastern Oregon. Twenty of the primitively marked horses were released in the Kiger HMA, and seven in the Riddle Mountain HMA.

Kiger Mustangs are an established breed. Spanish markers were found in their blood during genetic testing by the University of Kentucky. They carry the dominant genes which code for the primitive dun factor coloration and markings. Dun factor horses are most commonly identified as duns and grullas. Dun factor markings include: dorsal stripe, jack stripe, zebra stripes on legs, arm bars, bicolored mane and tail, ears with dark outline and fawn colored interior, facial mask and cobwebbing.

The Kiger Mustang is slightly smaller than most breeds. The ears are finely pointed and slightly hooked at the tip. The head displays a broad, flat forehead, wide, prominent eyes and fine muzzle. The body conformation of the Kiger is distinctive, with chest of good depth and width, and the back short, broad and well muscled. Dense bone, compact hooves and a well-crested neck round out this unique horse.

REASONS NOT TO ASSAULT A RANCH WOMAN

An alley full of mad, snot-slinging cows that weigh over 800 pounds

We've held down calves that outweigh you by four times. Don't try to intimidate us. Most of our husbands stand a head and shoulders taller, outweigh us by 100 pounds and we aren't scared of them. Why would we be frightened by someone who can't keep their pants up?
Every time we work cows, our husbands threaten us if we don't get out of the gate. They threaten us if we don't stay in the gate. We are pretty much not impressed by threats. Plus, if you get much closer we may give you some threats of our own to consider and be able to back it up.

Don't wave that knife at me, boy. I castrate when we brand, throw the 'mountain oysters on the fire AND eat them, dirt and all. You probably don't want to go there. Don't threaten to steal my pickup. I work for a living, so have insurance. The chances of you being able to drive a standard are next to none and there is no spare.

I've walked home from the back side of the ranch, I can walk from here you want my purse? Take my purse. It has little money in it because, as I mentioned, I work for a living. You will find various receipts for feed and vet supplies, some dried up gum and the notice for my next teeth cleaning.

The only 'drugs' you will find is something that is either aspirin or a calf scours pill but its been in there so long I've forgotten which it is,
Don't threaten to hurt me. I may look old and fragile to you, but I can ride horse back for 12 hours, with nothing to eat or drink. I have been kicked bucked off, run over and mucked out I've had worse things happen to me in the corrals than you have experienced in the little gang wars you've been through, and still cooked supper for a crew.

You may whip me, son, but you'll be a tired, sore S.O.B. in the morning and yes, I will remember your face because I am used to knowing which calf belongs to which cow. I'll also remember which direction you went and what you were wearing because I've tracked many a cow with less information than you've given me. You are not going to scare me with that little 'Saturday Night Special' when I have a .38 in my boot.

You need not think I won't shoot you. I've shot several coyotes and numerous rattlesnakes. I put down my horse when he broke his leg and shot my pet dog when he killed some sheep. Don't think I won't consider you a rabid dog and go on my way.

All too often our equine companions develop the dreaded
problem called Laminitis. Laminitis means inflammation
(re. itis) of the lamina. Lamina are the major structural
components of the hoof wall. When these become
inflamed a structural breakdown of the hoof can occur.
This may even result in that really dreaded consequence
of laminitis called rotation. Rotation is a shifting of the
actual bone in the foot called a phalanx, which in
common terms, is the toe. In the horse it is referred to as
P3 or phalanx 3 (also known as the coffin bone in both
the front and hind legs, and sometimes as the pedal in
the hind leg).
When P3 does not have the support of the lamina or
hoof wall then P3 can actually protrude through the
bottom or sole of the hoof, resulting in abscesses of the
hoof. This can happen so fast that very little can be done
once it begins. Heroic attempts are often made with
special shoes, drugs, etc. but obviously it is always
serious — very serious.
Unfortunately drugs, especially steroids or antibiotics
can cause laminitis. With the over zealous use of such in
today’s medicine, such use can be even worse than the
consequences from what they are trying to fix in the
first place. Personally, I avoid the use of steroids in my
horses for fear of this possibility of laminitis (and other
things) and offer antibiotics only when a LIFE
THREATENING situation warrants such. I don’t know
for sure, but I suspect that even Barbaro’s laminitis, that
ultimately caused his demise, was a result of steroids
and such – and I know he received the best of care! It is
sort of “damned if you do or damned if you don’t” thing.
BUT quite frankly, all the more reason to have an
understanding of alternative or more natural treatments.
All this being said, I am sure you will agree that the key
to laminitis is to prevent it from ever occurring in the
first place. When it happens .. it hurts! It is painful to the
horse and to your pocket book. Can I help you ALWAYS
prevent it? NO! But honestly, I think I have a pretty good
handle on it. I have shared it with many of you in the
past in a general sort of way, but here I am going to cut
right to the chase and tell it like it is! Of course, “telling
it like it is” is my “modus operendi” anyway. Honestly
though, prevention is more simple than you might think.
In my opinion man causes most laminitis! Now I know
we don’t mean too, but we do. Have you ever left a feed
door open and somehow that very day… that one very
day out of every other day of the year… the horse gets
out of the stall or breaks through the fence and eats more
feed than he should? If you answer no…. you are a lucky
man… or woman! I hope you have never experienced
this but if you have, you probably remember the feeling
well. Your heart suddenly falls into your stomach — a
real pain in the gut not only for you but also the horses!
I hope I haven’t brought back home some bad memories
but…. Since we have the pain in the gut let’s just go
ahead and talk about the gut.
Almost every major health problem in the horses starts
in the gut. Horses have huge intestines and along with
the skin (even larger surface area) and the liver, the
intestines are the bodies first line of defense. Just imagine
what a job the intestines have. The very lining of the
intestines themselves are constantly deciding what is
good for the body and what is bad….. Decisions,
decisions, decisions, don’t you hate them? The “Good”
is absorbed and utilized as fuel for the body. The “Bad”
is immediately discharged through the feces or dealt with
some other way. It is the “in-between” that the body
must actually deal with. Sort of like life in general—the
“indecision” ..that “trying to decide” part that drives us
crazy. Any change to this incredibly balanced system
could be life threatening.
But how can a change in gut cause a problem in the
feet? A very good question indeed… and honestly man
doesn’t know all the answers. One thing for sure that
we do know is that when you suddenly change the
bacteria in the gut all He…double hockey sticks, (LL),
breaks out! We know that too much food within to short
of time can cause such a change and we know that
medications (the antibiotics, the steroids) can as well.
What if I told you that a salt block or a mineral block
could cause it?

Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) bacterial infections have become hot news lately, especially among horse people. This topic likely won't die down soon because recent research shows that MRSA is up to 10 times more common in equine veterinarians than in the general population--and that it can spread from horses to humans.

"MRSA appears to be an occupational risk factor for large animal veterinarians," noted Maureen Anderson, DVM, DVSc, postdoctoral fellow in the Department of Pathobiology of the University of Guelph in Ontario, Canada.

At the 2008 American Association of Equine Practitioners (AAEP) convention, held Dec. 6-10 in San Diego, Calif., Anderson discussed MRSA biology, prevalence, and recent research. She reported that MRSA can cause many different problems, from superficial skin/soft tissue infections to necrotizing (tissue-killing) pneumonia. Some hospital-associated strains in humans are resistant to multiple classes of antibiotics, leaving very few effective treatment options for people who become infected. There is increasing concern that some strains might ultimately develop resistance to these few remaining antibiotic weapons.

The general human population has an estimated 0.2-3.5% MRSA colonization rate (carrier state), and contact with horses and pigs appears to increase one's risk of MRSA colonization, noted Anderson. Some studies have shown that large-animal veterinary personnel are up to four times more likely to be colonized than the general population; nearly 16% of large-animal veterinary personnel at a veterinary internal medicine conference were colonized, compared to 4.4% of small-animal veterinary personnel. And at the 2006 AAEP convention, 10.1% of the equine veterinary personnel tested were colonized.

Not all types of MRSA are created equal; there are several different strains with different capabilities. The ST398 form, for example, is often associated with food animals in Europe, but it is now also being found in horses. "This type of MRSA seems to readily cross species barriers; it has a high potential for zoonotic transmission (transmissible between animals and humans)," Anderson commented.

In contrast, she reported that CMRSA-5 and closely related strains are most common in horses, but they are fairly uncommon in people in general, suggesting that they might be adapted to survival in horses. The CMRSA-5 type was most common in the AAEP 2006 attendees, present in 54% of the positive subjects.

It seems clear that MRSA can spread from horses to humans. Anderson reported one incident occurring in an equine intensive care unit where contact with a foal colonized with MRSA resulted in skin infections in three personnel and colonization of 10 others. Another incident involved a skin infection of a veterinary resident's tattoo site; the MRSA strain was the same as that in two equine patients the resident had been attending.

MRSA Risk Factors and Prevention

While few studies on MRSA risk factors have been done in horses, Anderson reported that colonization is (logically) a risk factor for active infection. Other equine risk factors for MRSA colonization include:

* Administration of ceftiofur or aminoglycoside antimicrobials in hospitalized horses (this might be related to conditions/weakened immune systems requiring antimicrobials, rather than the antimicrobials themselves).
* On admission to hospitals, additional risk factors include administration of antimicrobials within 30 days of hospital admission; admission to a neonatal intensive care unit or nonsurgical service; and residence on a farm on which a horse was previously diagnosed with MRSA.
* Residence on a farm with more than 20 horses is a risk factor for MRSA colonization of horses in the community.

Luckily, "It seems that the majority of horses are not persistently colonized and will clear the MRSA on their own if re-exposure can be prevented," Anderson said. "Therefore, drug therapy is not advocated unless clinical signs of infection are present."

Instead, quarantine infected or colonized horses and gradually move them to clean herds (or groups) once they test negative to prevent widespread MRSA colonization.

According to the AAEP 2006 study, risk factors for MRSA colonization in veterinary personnel include diagnosis of MRSA colonization or infection within the last year and treatment of a horse diagnosed with MRSA in the last year. Protective factors include hand washing with soap and water between potentially infectious cases and between visits to different farms. Anderson noted that one study showed that alcohol-based hand sanitizers were even more effective at reducing bacterial counts on the hands than antibacterial soap and water. However, she also noted that these are most effective when used on hands that aren't visibly dirty; thus, washing hands before applying hand sanitizers might be the most effective approach.

Treatment

"I cannot possibly emphasize enough how important it is to treat MRSA based on culture and sensitivity results (to identify what drugs will kill the bacteria before treating the infection)," advised Anderson. "Don't crack a walnut with a sledgehammer; vancomycin is not a first-line antimicrobial. MRSA in horses is not at the point it is in human hospitals where the bugs are so resistant to everything that they need vancomycin. In horses we can still use other drugs. Use local therapy wherever possible; wound debridement and lavage can go a long way toward decreasing the amount of antimicrobials used.

"Equine MRSA is not going away; we're going to have to deal with it," she summarized. "We need controlled studies to evaluate risk factors in hospital/community equine populations, and we must increase awareness of its zoonotic potential and the design/use of infectious disease control protocols. Hygiene and barrier protocols (such as gloves, gowns, and boot covers) are the keys."
